In recent years, there has been a growing recognition of the huge gender disparities that persist in these industries. While women have made remarkable achievements in various aspects of society, their representation in STEM remains very low. Here we will have a peep into the challenges women face in pursuing STEM careers, the importance of encouraging gender diversity in these fields, and the broader implications for innovation, progress, and societal equity. Women remain underrepresented in STEM, with only 27% of STEM professionals being female in India as per the World Economic Forum's Gender Gap Report, 2023. Historically women were discouraged from pursuing careers in STEM (scientific careers), as it was considered a field only for men and their contributions were often overshadowed or dismissed. The gender gap in STEM reveals a longstanding disparity rooted in societal norms and biases.  Addressing this imbalance is imperative for several reasons. Firstly, to ensure that the vast pool of talent among women is fully harnessed for scientific progress. Secondly, diversity in STEM leads to more innovative solutions and a broader range of perspectives, which is crucial for tackling complex challenges. Finally, addressing the gender gap promotes equality and sets an example for future generations, inspiring more young girls to pursue careers in STEM, which is not just a matter of fairness, but a necessity for the advancement of science and society as a whole.

There are many successful women in various STEM fields, who serve as beacons of inspiration and change, for instance, Kathrine Johnson, Marie Curie, Grace Hopper, Barbara McClintock, etc. From India, examples of women who excelled in STEM fields are Ayyalasomayajula Lalitha, Sarla Thukral, Kalpana Chawla, Dr Anandibai Gopal Joshi, Dr Aditi Pant etc. These remarkable individuals have shattered glass ceilings and achieved remarkable milestones, becoming pioneers in their respective domains. Their achievements and contributions span from groundbreaking research to technological innovations and advocacy for gender equality in STEM. Their impact on the STEM community of women is profound. By excelling in their fields, they challenge stereotypes and prove that gender is not a barrier to success in STEM. A few renowned ladies in the field of STEM:

  1. Katherine Johnson, was a Mathematician, who is known for calculating the Apollo 11 mission trajectories that Sent astronauts to the moon. She was the first African-American to defy all odds of her time and worked at NASA.
  2. Sarla Thukral India's 1st female pilot to get a flying licence at the age of 21, in 1936. Not only did She fly the aircraft solo and that too in a Saree, but made history. Broke the patriarchal glass ceiling.
